According to the Mile High United Way, there are approximately 17,000 nonprofit organizations registered in the state of Colorado. While all are obviously performing good works, unfortunately the vast number means that there is incredible competition for donor dollars and volunteer hours.

More than ever, nonprofit organizations need to set themselves apart through their marketing and promotional materials. In addition, donors and volunteers are virtually demanding greater financial transparency. Traditionally, large nonprofit organizations accomplished this through their annual reports. It's time for smaller nonprofits to do the same.

An annual report is more than just a marketing piece that is provided to donors and volunteers once a year. Yes, crucial financial data is provided. However, it's also an opportunity to provide information about programs and services, future plans and thank everyone for their support. It's also a way to reach potential donors and volunteers, inform the media about what an organization does and serve as an integral part of the grant-application process.
